What is the OAE test?
The OAE (Otoacoustic Emissions) test is a quick, painless screening that checks how your baby's inner ear (cochlea) is working. A small, soft probe is placed gently at the opening of the baby's ear. It plays soft sounds and records the tiny "echo" a healthy inner ear sends back. Most babies sleep right through it.
Watch: a newborn hearing screening at Mind Over Mouth, Hisar
Why it matters
- Quick: the screening usually takes just a few minutes.
- Painless and non-invasive: no needles and no discomfort, often done while your baby sleeps.
- Early answers: good hearing supports better speech, learning and overall development, so the earlier hearing is checked, the better.
Understanding the result
Pass: a great start. Keep watching your child's speech and listening milestones as they grow.
Refer: don't worry. A "refer" result does not mean your baby has hearing loss. It can happen because of fluid in the ear, a noisy room or a restless baby. It simply means further evaluation by an audiologist is advised.
